Jim and Rosie were looking to build a log holiday home with a difference – it needed to have a contemporary yet cosy and welcoming appearance, and be designed to suit a discerning clientele.

The Soina log home design really appealed to them, but required some alterations to make it suit their business plan. To achieve this, they engaged a local architect to help redesign the internal layout, providing more headroom upstairs, so that each bedroom could have its own ensuite bathroom, and a ground floor bedroom with an ensuite wetroom. They kept the spacious living area, which is open to the roof inside, but they made the large decked area even larger to create plenty of space for sitting outside.

Jim wanted to build the house himself, so they requested assistance from an experienced log home constructor for a few weeks to help with putting up the shell of the house, and fitting the windows. Once the shell was up and watertight, and with other demands on their time, it took several more months for the log home to be ready to receive its first guests.

Jim’s excellent attention to detail really shows, and the results of his labours are well worth the time taken.
They chose a number of features to add to the sense of luxury in the holiday home, including a standing seam zinc roof that works well with the interesting roof lines, and a contemporary log burner.

In the interest of practicality, they also made the main entrance step free, to enable the home to be used by a wide range of customers. The couple wanted to minimise heating bills, and appreciated the fact that the highly insulated log building kit came complete with double glazed windows with an excellent U value. To help reduce the carbon footprint of the project, they included a wind turbine and a ground source heat pump, making the most of renewable energy sources. They also installed a hot tub on the surrounding decking. Guests seem to really appreciate the details, and the holiday home now has several five star reviews.
